Arsonists burned the original down July 4, 1963. It was rebuilt in 1990, marking the entrance to Orient Harbor and the waters of the east end.

It received it's name during the Revolutionary War. It was said that the British chained up their prisoners to the walls of a deep pit that was dug into the rock reef. They drowned as high tide filled the pit and rushed over the rocks.

This lighthouse was saved from being sold by the release of the children's book "The Little Red Lighthouse" and the Great Gray Bridge. A great deal of protest was created, so the Coast Guard gave it to the city's Parks Department.
